Vile Nostalgia: La Bouche

You know you're getting old when you nostalgia for crap you barely even liked (or flat out hated) before only because it reminds you of the past. Ladies and Gents, it's with great sorrow that I present this latest installment of Vile Nostalgia...
No longer referred to as: LA DOUCHE
I remember sleeping over a friend's house one time when I was like eleven. Me and a bunch of other little dudes stayed over, playing Super Nintendo and watching rated R movies. It was rad. That is until, everyone finally knocked out around 1am. While all the other kids dozed off I was kept awake by the booming music coming from the party next door. Loud, 1990's House music. My dislike for electronic music was born then and there.

I've become a tad more opened minded over the years. I'm more open to trying to new foods, wearing different clothes/colors (re: still lots of black doe. C'mon now!) and yes even enjoying different types of music. Although I still despise just about everything I hear people's radio & pandora stations...I've actually grown to enjoy certain electronic music acts. That being said, I never thought my grudge against 90's dance music would subside...then I threw on A Night At The Roxbury the other night.

For the record, I've always loved this movie. I was quoting A Night At The Roxbury since day one yo. I used to laugh at the Butabi brother's silly antics and sneer at their horrible, horrible taste in music. Something happened this last time I watched the film though. I found myself grinning like an idiot as soon as Haddaway's "What Is Love" started playing. I chalked it up to just being excited about the movie starting. The thing is, I perked up like a puppy every time one of the different club/dance songs played onscreen. By the time "Be My Lover" from La Bouche came on, I knew I had been swept up by a wave of full blown Vile Nostalgia.

Vile Nostalgia: Blink 182

Haters no longer Hating
When I was a young teenage lad I listened to whatever was played on the radio. Hailing from Southern California, that meant a lot of Blink-182. I got their 2nd album Dude Ranch sometime in the late 90's and thought it was pretty rocking...
...that is, until I become a snobby little metal head.

(Ed. Note: How hot was Alyssa Milano in that video?!?! Daaaaaamn. Also, lol @ Miller's Outpost era clothes/fashion!).

Once I entered high school and started digging classic from Slayer, Death, Sepultura and new bands (well, new at the time...fuck I'm old) like Lamb of God and Hatebreed, I stopped enjoying the feel good zany pop rock of bands like Blink-182. Also, this was around the time they got big with their album Enema of The State, where they went from heroes of the alternative rock airwaves, to champions of MTV's TRL video countdown. Basically, all the girls and cool kids in school started liking them so you know, I couldn't have any part of that man!

Well, the times they have a changed. Now I'm old and cranky. I've pretty much melted my brain listening to some of the most fucked up technically challenging/chaotic noise the underground metal world can churn out. Now I hear an old Blink-182 song on the radio I don't turn away in disgust, quite the contrary, I turn that sucker up louder! Part nostalgia, for simpler times when worry about a lame band's popularity seem so important, and partially just honest enjoyment of catchy jams that are actually pleasing to the ear, I now renounce my hatred for Blink-182 and welcome with open arms into my VILE NOSTALGIA collection.

Movie Review: 21 Jump Street

pleasantly surprised

I initially cringed at the idea of remaking 21 Jump Street. Growing up in the early 90's, I remember watching reruns on TV after my early morning cartoons had ended. I know it's cheesy as hell, but I loved that show and still know all the words to the theme song. Anyways, I was kind of pissed Hollywood was going to mess with my cherished childhood memories. Luckily, this movie isn't all that bad. In fact I laughed quite a bit.

Here are the two reasons I feel the new 21 Jump Street reboot works. Vile Nostalgia and Channing Tatum.

Here at Jim's Fear, I like to classify Vile Nostalgia as getting all misty eyed/longing for things that you previously hated or something that makes no sense at all. My previous post about Paula Abdul is a perfect example. Anyways, 21 Jump Street's big gag is that two police officers who graduated high school in 2005 are out of touch cave men when they head back to campus as undercover cops in 2012.
OMG! Nostaliga for Slim Shady = LULZ
This sounds pretty asinine when you think about it. Like that South Park episode ("Prehistoric Ice Man") with the dude from 1996 who gets frozen for three years and can't handle the cruel future world of....1999. Shit JUST happened man! Although this seems lame at first, once the two protagonists actually set foot in high school again you see just how funny and real it all is. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum's characters are relics from a pre-iPhone era. The high school students of today are more tech savvy, socially aware and intellectual than the neanderthals of the the 2000's. Obama's been their president since they were kids, they instant stream their music/porn and don't even bother downloading it. One of my favorite parts of the movie is when they're strolling the high school parking lot on their first day and fail at trying to identify all the familiar social cliques.

The other great thing about 21 Jump Street is Mr. (secret gay icon himself) Channing Tatum. Never thought I'd be praising this dude's acting chops but I gotta say, he had me laughing. Jonah Hill basically plays the same neurotic character he does in all his comedies but Tatum's timing and delivery of certain lines ("FUCK SCIENCE!") were flat out hilarious. The whole movie is insanely tongue in cheek. I'm talking flat out campy, complete with cameos from the original 21 Jump Street cast (Johhny Depp, Peter DeLuise, Holly Robinson Peete, and even a brief shout out to Dustin Nguygen) so it kind of amazed me that in a movie so wholeheartedly absurd as this, Channing Tatum's character was the only person I believed was real. Kudos man. "AP Chemistry Bitch."

I'd recommend this to anyone who likes goofy ass buddy pictures or people who suffer from Vile Nostalgia, even if it's for Y2K, like myself.

Vile Nostalgia: Paula Abdul

I don't watch American Idol or any of those shows. I know Paula Abdul is famous for being an emotional nutcase on reality programs these days but when I was a young lad I remember hearing her songs on the radio/tape player while sitting in my mom's car, or watching her on MTV at my cousin's house. I don't think I particularly cared for her tunes but I was totally stoked on the "Opposites Attract" video with the cartoon cat. That was awesome! Either way I kind of forgot about Paula Abdul's music for oh, about 20+ years...

Then I heard J Cole's song "Work Out" while closing one night. That's how I learn about all the stuff kids like these days, from the shitty boombox at work. Anyways, the dude straight up copies the hook from Paula Abdul's hit, um, "Straight Up."

It was THEN that the nostalgia wave hit me like a ton of bricks. All those songs I forgot about for two decades suddenly became lost friends I wanted, nay, needed to reacquaint myself with. I've been hitting the youtube pretty hard in search of lost Abdul classics.

EPIC violin solo @ 2:57 mark! How awesome is it that nearly all the 1988 outfits in this video can be purchased at American Apparel stores in 2012?

Fucking KEANU REEVES REPRESENT! Johnny Utah doing his best James Dean in this clip. How awesome is that? Also makes me want to go back to the Griffith Park Observatory. It's such a rad place. Amazing views and you actually learn stuff.

finally, the greatest music video of all time (well, I embellish...just a tad):

post-Roger Rabbit, pre-Space Jam human cartoon awesomeness. I think I watched this video 2.7 million times as a kid. I'm doing a half assed version of their dance routine in my chair as I type this.

MFW listening to 80's era Paula Abdul
So there it is. Paula Abdul, you have special place in my vile, nostalgia filled heart.

Vile Nostalgia: Boy Meets World

You know you're getting old when you nostalgia for crap you barely even liked (or flat out hated) before only because it reminds of the past. Ladies and Gents, respected bloggers and all you trolls out there, it's with great sorrow that I present this latest installment of Vile Nostalgia...

TGIF allstars
So I'm flipping through the channels this past Saturday, enjoying a lazy day off and what do I see before my eyes? Old school episodes of Boy Meets World's first season on MTV2. Yeah, it didn't make much sense to me either but out of morbid curiosity I stopped and watched a little of it. This quickly transformed into a full on nostalgia wave and I watched about 3 or 4 episodes and loved every second of it!

I grew up watching TGIF sitcoms on ABC and although not my favorite, Boy Meets World was something I pretty much always watched. Unfortunately, as the kids aged the show got a a bit lamer and lamer until by the end it was a wildly outlandish crap fest. I guess this memory of the last few seasons has tainted my view of the entire series. Thankfully, MTV2's little weekend marathon has restored my faith in the series by highlighting the awesomeness of the shows first season.

Love that campy intro! It's so bad it's awesome. Now keep in mind Boy Meets World had like 500 different intros throughout it's 7 season run but honestly, I love this hokey first one the best. See those cheesy computer graphics flying around?! Damn I miss the early 90's.

I think the show was most effective in it's early years. When the kids were still, kids and learned valuable lessons from their teacher (like the always awesome Mr. Feeny) or their parents. Also, the first season still featured Minkus and Cory's adorable little sister Morgan (before Minkus vanished to the other side of the school for about 6 years, and Morgan was replaced by an older, brattier actress).

So yeah. I get a kick out of laughing at their outrageous 90's fashions, with the baggy clothes and funky haircuts and flashing back to when I was a young school punk myself, but now that I'm older I appreciate the show on a different level. The show is heartfelt while remaining wildly entertaining. Kudos to MTV2 for restoring my faith in the Matthews family.

Vile Nostalgia: Sisqo

You know you're getting old when you nostalgia for crap you barely even liked (or flat out hated) before only because it reminds of the past. Ladies and Gents, respected bloggers and all you trolls out there, it's with great sorrow that I present this latest installment of Vile Nostalgia...

DAT Glove
Sometimes it's ok to like stupid crap. I just bought Piranha 3D on Blu-ray the other day. Sure it's a horrible movie but in my humble opinion, it's so bad it's amazing. That same logic applies when listening to Sisqo's "The Thong Song." It's just so bad you can't help but love it.

I wasn't the totally depraved death metal aficionado I am now back in 2000. No, back then I still listened to the radio and watched MTV regularly and although more often than not I was starting to lose interest in the mainstream drivel being forced down my throat, something about the "thong song" lured me in. Yeah, it's about sexy women's underwear. Yeah, I was a pervy teenager at the time and yeah the music video was jam packed with hot chicks, but I'm talking about the contents of the actual song. Sisqo's use of repetition is what did it. He's like a silver haired cult leader, chanting his way into the listener's psyche. Repeating the words "truck" "what" and "butt" 3x in a row before going off the map repeating "thong" until your brain wants to suddenly invest in Victoria's Secret.

How about that video? Joseph Kahn is a damn genius! Did you guys like that little SFX sonic boom the dancers do at the 3:04 mark?! I always thought that was rad. After the Matrix came out everyone was trying to do awesome stuff like that for no reason. Oh Sisqo, where are you when we need you man?

Vile Nostalgia: Limp Bizkit

You know you're getting old when you nostalgia for crap you barely even liked (or flat out hated) before only because it reminds of the past. Ladies and Gents, respected bloggers and all you trolls out there, it's with great sorrow that I present this latest installment of Vile Nostalgia...

"So come and get it"
I never got into Limp Bizkit. I tried to though. I really did. I bought their debut album, 3 Dollar Bill Yall$ after being brainwashed by radio/MTV into liking their cover of George Michael's song "Faith." Once I actually listened to the album I realized that "Faith" was the best song on it (and it wasn't even theirs!) and felt totally ripped off. My brief stint on the Limp Bizkit bandwagon may not have lasted long, but Fred Durst and his merry men did just fine without me.

The band's fame exploded in the late 90's/early 00's. They rode the anti-boy band wave of Nu-Metal aggro rock to astonishing heights. Selling millions of albums, touring arenas, pushing insanely popular music videos all over the MTV. Luckily, the band's popularity dropped once Ozzfest brought the Hatebreed style mosh to rural America in the mid 2000's.

Well guess what? Now I'm old and sort of get a kick out of Limp Bizkit's song "Break Stuff." No, I lie. I totally love this song. I have this thing with a co-worker of mine where we play fill in the blanks with some of the song's lyrics.
Here's some examples:
Q: "I'm a like a chainsaw. Chainsaw. I'll___ ___ ___ raw."
A: "skin your ass"

Q: "And if my day keeps going this way I just might ____ _____ _____ _____ tonight."
A: "break your fucking face"

It's so awesome! Enjoy today's little slice of Vile Nostalgia. Brought to you by yet another shitty day of work.

Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Jonathan Davis (Korn) and Pauly Shore cameos? HAHA. Kudos to anyone who recognized Stryker from KROQ radio/Loveline fame as well. Part of me misses those baggy pants and frosted/bleached hair cuts of the early millennium. The pathetic side. Apparently Limp Bizkit has a new album out. They're like the crappy gift that keeps on giving....

Vile Nostalgia: Wheatus

You know you're getting old when you nostalgia for crap you barely even liked (or flat out hated) before only because it reminds of the past. Ladies and Gents, respected bloggers and all you trolls out there, it's with great sorrow that I present this latest installment of Vile Nostalgia...

Who? Just some dirtbag...
Wheatus? Who or whats a Wheatus? They're the rock band behind  2000's hit single, "Teenage Dirtbag." I absolutely hated this song back when it came out. These guys seemed like an even goofier rip off of Weezer's nerd rock shtick and it drove me fucking crazy. I mean, really, the dude from Wheatus ( Brandon B. Brown) made Rivers Cuomo look like Tupac. SO ANYWAYS, I did not enjoy this song back in the day nor did I ever bother to watch the movie it was tied with via soundtrack, the capitalize on American Pie's success by putting Jason Biggs and Mena Suvari in the same movie...Loser. In fact the only thing I remotely liked about this song was the fact the dude sings about Iron Maiden in the chorus. I was a Padawan metal head around then and got a kick out of hearing Iron Maiden's name mentioned on the radio.

Well, the jokes on me. It's eleven years later, I'm old and totally love this song now. The soft-loud dynamics between the Dave Matthews whiteboy jam meets Korn aggro crunch...the fact that theres some random DJ scratching in the background...all totally 90's!

I don't know whats better, the song or the video? Look at those haircuts, the bright, vibrant wardrobes signifying the cultural diversity/prosperity of the Clinton years. Mena Suvari was still cute...a major case of Vile Nostalgia if I say so. Damn you Wheatus. Damn you!

*BONUS CLIP*
proof that no one can deny the power of Wheatus, a bunch of Marines in Iraq from HBO's Generation Kill miniseries rocking out to....

Vile Nostalgia: Nelly

You know you're getting old when you nostalgia for crap you barely even liked (or flat out hated) before only because it reminds of the past. This isn't like my previous Winnie The Pooh post, which I regard as Awesome Nostalgia, no this is something far more sinister. Ladies and Gents, respected bloggers and all you trolls out there, it's with great sorrow that I introduce this new segment to Jim's Fear(s) bloggy blog: Vile Nostalgia.

help me Obi-wan, you're my only hope...
Never thought I'd long for the days when Mr. Band-aid face ruled the cultural Zeitgeist. The comments section for this youtube video are sad/pathetic yet awesomely accurate. Ol' Nelly, with his baggy attire, sports jerseys and bling is Sooooooooooo late 90's/early Millennium man. Nowadays, all the famous rap dudes sport skinny jeans, sci-fi themed robot gear and have even less talent thanks to the wonders of auto-tune.

This song will now haunt you for the rest of the day, this I'm certain of....

and LOL at Kelly Rowland from Destiny's Child and her vintage cell phone/text. VILE NOSTALGIA ONCE AGAIN!
