Storyline Dilema

Hey bloggers. As some of you might remember, I was contemplating the merits of film school. I took a screen writing course as an elective before I finished my undergrad and loved it. My professor liked my short film script and encouraged me to try my hand at crafting a legit screenplay. One of the rules in class was to show, not tell about our characters exploits. Meaning not to rely on phone conversations or other technological interventions that ruin the pacing and overall plot of a film. So I've been sitting around, coming up with ideas for potential scripts and am faced with a one reoccurring problem: technology may make our modern lives more convenient...but it royally fucks with the dramatic tension needed in my storyline!

Case in point: THE INTERNET

death to cell phones in movies also.

  2. Perfect way around it? Set up the story at least 20 years ago. Voila.

  3. A lot of action/horror movies would be a lot shorter if they had cell phones that didn't break at the snap of a finger.

Then again if a movie doesn't address the technology of its time period it can seem kind of forced!

  4. Hilarious video- thank you for sharing!

Seriously though, dramatic irony can still be achieved in many ways by using: characters that live out in the sticks without a connection to internet or cell phones, people being given incorrect information online or through email, instant message, etc., characters that have their computers broken (although in my case that would necessitate paying for overnight shipping for a replacement), lazy characters that don't bother using the internet to check important things, less intelligent characters that aren't aware of the resources available to them, etc.

  6. Film school would be cool, but it might be just as awesome to hang around people who have already made it big. I know, easier said than done.
