So I don't do drugs. No drinking, no smoking, no shooting up, no licking toads, none of it. Why do I abstain from such awesome recreational activities? I really don't know. I've always been rather sickly and the idea of making my feeble body even worse via drugs or illicit substances never really appealed to me. I will have an occasional drink but have never been (or plan to be) drunk in my life. I'm not trying to preach to you bloggers on some high and mighty Straight Edge/Teetotaler soapbox. I'm around drunken pot heads on a regular basis (friends, can't live with em', can't live without em') and really don't care what people choose to do with their lives, this is just some personal BS I've adhered to since forever.
My post about Russian beer regulation and the headlines from Amy Winehouse's death got me thinking about society and it's complacency with drugs. I'm not talking about the bullshit U.S. War on Drugs. Criminalizing this stuff is a horrid idea. I'm talking about people's willful desire to slowly but surely poison themselves. Why are so many people down to kill brain cells? Why does society largely ostracize those who refrain from recreational drug/alcohol use? Next time someone looks at me like an alien when I say I don't do that, I'll tell them Kermit, Tigger, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Alf, Garfield, Bugs Bunny, Huey, Duey and Louie told me not to.
Glad you're open minding about it, I actually admire people that are happy with the way they feel and don't feel compelled to alter their reality. High five!
there's many different reasons to use drugs/alcohol. they all consist of just wanting to feel "different". Some make you relaxed, some fast paced, etc. Before you know it you can be addicted to the "different" feeling.
I respect the people who say no much more than the people who get peer pressured in. I respect the people who know what they're doing to themselves even more. And I mean really know, the ones that know how their drug of choice works and how it's ruining them, if they know and they don't care I leave them be. Everyone's outlook on life is different, if someone knowingly ruins their life because they don't care, it's not my problem. It's also someone I'd rather not be associated with, but that's different than respect.
It's a respectable position to not want to lose control of your body. I don't do drugs myself, but I enjoy drinking. I used to get horribly drunk, but mostly I stay far from that with maybe a glass or two of gin. Getting shit-faced doesn't really do it for me. But at the same time, drinking doesn't kill brain cells, it merely dulls their response, drinking takes a bigger toll on the liver and other internal organs.
I used to smoke dope a lot of years ago and found that it made me paranoid and lazy. i've done so much more now since I quit an although halfway through my forties I am in the best shape of my life. Smug rant over.
The odd drink and i really mean rare for me, my addiction is figures and wargaming.

ReplyDeleteLOL. I have only tried pot once when I was in high school and honestly I am not much of a fan. :P
ReplyDeleteplus those things cost money. ;)
ReplyDeletePeople like you are rare; nobody wants to be "excluded" from society.
ReplyDeleteMyself, I do drugs and alcohol, but once a year or a bit more; I like the taste of beer and pot, but I like more the homemade food of my mother :D
i believe it's a built-in biological drive. not sure what you mean by "why".
ReplyDeleteHehhehe it is funny :D
ReplyDeleteDrugs are a waste of time and money. Hopefully you're rewarded with a long healthy life.
ReplyDeleteI'm the same exact way bro. Rather waste my brain cells on games, way cheaper.
ReplyDeletekeep doing it, you're right!
